Research
I began doing some research and found some images that spoke to me personally, in relation to the script I had read. I found images that would help me communicate the world I saw in which this show would take place. The most important one that would never leave my head was from the University of Oregon (designer unknown).
When Jack Rueler, the director, came to do auditions last Fall things really picked up. At our first meeting we discussed what the show would be and I was able to share the photos I had found.
I was excited to hear some of the words I had hoped to hear: “Sherlockian” “magic” “surprise” “Victorian”. These are the words I remember.
I began designing with many ideas in my head. I incorporated the elements I had heard discussed in that meeting. I did careful research of Sherlock Holmes and looked everywhere to make sure I had incorporated the correct elements notable to any Sherlockian. I researched stage magic and found moments where we could incorporate magic into the show. I also deeply researched the elements of Victorian England, especially London.
